Philanthropy

Carving For Cancer

Occurring every Halloween, Carving for Cancer is our fall philanthropy and our largest philanthropic event of the year. It is a pumpkin carving contest with live music, flannel attire, and plenty of fall spirit! Carving is an afternoon full of fall festivities in support of The Jimmy V Foundation. Each year, this event brings the best out of our SLO community and gathers hundreds of students together to raise money for a great cause. The Brothers love this event because of the creativity displayed by every pumpkin carving team and the buzz created by the event every year.

Jimmy VK

The Jimmy VK is our annual winter philanthropy event, and it is a 5k fun run in honor of Jimmy Valvano. While the format of the event has changed over the past few years due to COVID, the intention to bring students, alumni, families, and the local SLO community together through athletics has not wavered. The event has previously been held virtually to maximize participation outside of the SLO area, but we are excited to bring the event back on campus and in person this year.

Art From the Heart

Created in Spring of 2023, Art from the Heart is our chapter’s newest and most exciting philanthropy event. Sections of the fence at our chapter house are auctioned off to participating sororities and all proceeds go towards the Jimmy V Foundation. The winning sororities are then invited to come spend a day soaking up the sun at MVP, listening to the Delta Chi band, and painting a mural on their section of the fence that reflects their philanthropic goals and relationship with our chapter. The Brothers love this event because it is a great way to round off the spring quarter and the murals create a lasting memento from the event.

Jimmy Valvano

Jimmy Valvano (1946-1993) was a renowned college basketball coach who led NC State to an unforgettable NCAA championship in 1983. Beyond basketball, he is celebrated for his emotional 1993 ESPY Awards speech, delivered shortly before his death from cancer.

Valvano's legacy endures through The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a charity he co-founded. It's dedicated to cancer research and fundraising and has funded nearly $290 million in research grants. The foundation maintains a strong connection with the Delta Chi fraternity as we understand the massive impact cancer has on families all over the world. His enduring impact extends to both sports and cancer research, making him a beloved and inspirational figure.

Meet our Philanthropy Chairmen

Jack Werle is a second-year economics major from San Jose, California. Jack was drawn to the philanthropy chair position because he wanted to maximize the social network of this chapter to build a stronger San Luis Obispo community and to have a tangible effect in the fight against cancer. Beyond his passion for philanthropy, Jack also loves playing soccer, snowboarding, and hiking. Jack spent most of this past summer working as a private trainer and personal soccer coach before traveling across Europe with his family.

Kye Harned is a second-year economics student from Ketchum, Idaho who spends his free time trail running, climbing, cooking, and reading. Last summer he spent his time studying in London and being a lumberjack back home in Idaho. Philanthropy has always been a position he has admired and is excited to bring the community together in support of a great cause!
